LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt series – 256GB SSD Teardown and Speed test

LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt series – 256GB SSD Tear down and Speed test

Today, I get hold of a unit of LaCie Rugged USB3.0. This portable SSD actually comes with a very soft rubberised sleeve that encase the 4 corners of the drive, as the name already stated rugged, hence it suppose to able to take some drop test that I presumed.

The rubberised orange sleeve for the actual product is quite brilliant , compared with the product show case from the OEM website, you can see the picture below on from my teardown section

The teardown of  LaCie Rugged USB3.0, actually revealed the internal SSD U100 is provided by SanDisk. I had also preform 1GB stress test with comparing the two interfaces provided. This LaCie Rugged USB3.0 SSD, did have a impressive result on my speed test but, I noticed that USB3.0 actually give a better read perform then thunderbolt interface. I’m not sure why is it so, maybe it got to do with the chipset and the design of the thunderbolt I/O controller.

Hi, I want to know if it´s possible to replace the original SSD u100 by another standard SSD to increase the capacity.

    Regards.

    1. Hi Abraham, its a standard Sata interface, hence your can try replace it with the another better SSD down the road. I had test it on SAMSUNG SSD 840 Pro too. Please note that it will void your warranty :/

  1. hi there i would like to know if if posible to upgrade the lacie rugged the comes with normal hard drive (spinning 720 rpm 500gb) to a ssd (any like samsung 850 pro), i am talking about this version the one that is not coming with the thunderbolt cable built in, thanks for your answer

    1. 👋Hi Jiff, I’m not sure if the lacie rugged the comes with normal hard drive is having the same industry standard SATA connector or not. If you current have one, with a brave heart no harm strip open to check. If is it having standard SATA, you’re safe to upgrade to any hard drive including SSD. My advise is upgrade your SSD firmware to latest before you install to the lacie rugged casing.
