GL-iNet external antenna modification

Equipment requires:

  • Hot air heater gun – SMT rework station or good soldering gun
  • Portable drill – to drill a hole on existing chassis to fit SMA connector.

Part requires:

  • IPX / IPEX (U.FL) to RP-SMA Female Pigtail Cable for Wifi Wireless Antenna   X1
  • Antenna (SMA-Male)   X1
  • IPX Surface Mount Plug

The below is close up of the circuit board, remove the resistor on R76. It’s not required with external antenna is connected. There two ground shield beside the R76 resistor, it is design to fit exactly for IPX surface mount plug.



The image below show of a IPX surface mount plug is soldered on the shield and antenna connect to the point where the R76 resistor is removed.



Complete the modification by drilling a hole on the plastic chassis and fit in SMA receptacle, in the same time plug in the IPX connector to the circuit board and finished off with antenna screwed in.



External antenna will give extra WIFI signal about 10-15% increment.

    The newer ones already have the IPEX socket :D

    I am not the author of this article, but when you look closer at the last picture, I think there is some crack visible or something, so I guess that brute force was used to remove top plate.
